Study Task 6//What do they do?

1. I Love Dust

I love dust is a big Design company with various focus ares within. For example type, illustration and animation. Promoting this many ares of design could be seen as a strengths as it opens up more opportunities for different clients. However by doing this they competing against a lot of different design studios who may not be as broad but more specific in their skills set. This puts more pressure on studios such as 'I love dust' to keep up the specialised designers. This could be seen as a threat. However, being such a big company allows them to hire more in house and freelance designers, creating jobs in the industry. Another advantage of working as bigger design company means working internationally, reaching out to clients in countries all over the world.

2. SI SCOTT

Si Scott is freelance designer who specialises in hand rendered type and image. He works independently for big companies such as Nike, Tiffany and Harrods. The strengths of working for yourself is that you can have more creative direction and can make decisions who accept work from. However, this can also be a weakness as often you won't have multiple views on the work. Si Scotts work is quite specialises which works for him and he is highly skilled within it. However, this could also be seen as a downfall as it limits what clients he will appeal to and the overall target audience.

3. ORLA KIELY

Originally a fashion designer, Orla Kiely made her mark by creating a print that was applied over a large product range and ended up being incredibly successful  Often, a simple idea can go a long way. At first she is a designer  but Orla Kiely is a brand in herself. Working around a designe that is already existing come with its pros and cons. It must be hard to to do different design work and be looked at differently. On the other hand, creating a successful design means it can be ever expanding. Competition includes Cath Kidston, Emma Bridgewater and even shops like Habitat.

Who am I competing against?
What do they offer?
What makes me better?
What makes me different?
